Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary’s long-running Christmas Bird Count continued recently, with seventeen volunteers out on the trails, in the accessible bird blind, and across the fields. The group, led by Libby Keyes, Joanne Guttman, and Pam Herrmann, spent the morning documenting winter bird life at the Sanctuary.
On December 28, volunteers completed the Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary’s 66th Christmas Bird Count, continuing a nearly consecutive run of counts that reaches back to the very first Mary Gray count on December 27, 1953 when three participants recorded 24 species. For the year, we matched last year’s record high of 71 species. The full species checklist and day-by-day totals for this year are available on the eBird trip report (https://ebird.org/tripreport/450949).
We’re grateful to everyone who turned out. These annual counts build a multi-decade record that informs our habitat stewardship and conservation work at Mary Gray. Click Here to learn more about all of Indiana’s Christmas Bird Counts.
