Sanctuary Land Steward, Alex Warchol, secures the cross-beams with MGBS Sanctuary Chair Richard Garrett.

The Tulip Poplar Trail at Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary offers a picturesque walk through the sanctuary’s iconic tulip trees, winding past small streams, ravines, and hills that echo the flow of the creek below. For years, the largest bridge connecting this trail to the main service road has battled erosion, with seasonal spring flooding reshaping the bank beneath it.

This past weekend, volunteers replaced the aging bridge with a sturdier, more resilient structure, ensuring safe access to this scenic part of Mary Gray. The new bridge, designed by former MGBS Sanctuary Chair Bill Cummings, is the first at the sanctuary robust enough to support ATVs and other small emergency vehicles, improving accessibility for any needed response.

A heartfelt thank you to all the volunteers who contributed to this two-day project! Special appreciation goes to Bill Cummings, Richard Garrett, and Dennis and Barb Gould for their dedicated efforts. Maintaining this beautiful sanctuary truly takes a team.

Did you know that over 20 bridges crisscross the MGBS screams and creeks. Your donations help us maintain our valued hiking trails. Thank you for your support!

Dennis and Barb Gould help secure the braces that will allow the bridge to support higher weights.
