Indiana Audubon has recertified the Town of Porter as a Bird Town Indiana partner, reaffirming the town’s commitment to protecting bird habitats and promoting environmental sustainability, and extending its certification for another year.
Bordering the Indiana Dunes National Park, Porter boasts diverse historical and natural public access sites, including Little Calumet River Trail, Mnoké Prairie, Howes Prairie and Miller Woods at the Dunes Learning Center.
This recertification acknowledges Porter’s continued efforts to protect and enhance natural habitats for birds and wildlife through initiatives like pollinator garden development, lawn-to-meadow recommendations and prairie plant restoration at Hawthorne Park, achieved through partnerships with organizations like Shirley Heinz Land Trust.
The town’s Environmental Sustainability Commission, established in January 2024, drives these initiatives forward. The Commission eco-friendly practices and preserving natural resources, significantly contributing to Porter’s recertification.
“We are proud to be part of the Bird Town Indiana network, and the recertification reinforces our commitment to providing vital habitats and resources for local bird populations,” said Tara Duffie, Environmental Sustainability Commission member.
Porter joins Beverly Shores, Chesterton, Geneva, Michigan City and Ogden Dunes as a certified Bird Town Indiana partner, committed to creating welcoming habitats, educating residents, and addressing threats to birds through community-driven conservation.
