Indiana Audubon will host a hands-on nature journaling workshop Saturday, Sept. 27, at Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary as part of its Discover Mary Gray series. The workshop invites participants to practice close observation and record their experiences in nature.
The 2025 Discover Mary Gray workshops highlight the sanctuary’s role in conservation, education and community connection, with workshops led by naturalists and educators and time both indoors and on the trails.
Naturalist, birder and educator Joni James will lead the Sept. 27 session, drawing on more than four decades in environmental education. She’ll guide participants through beginner-friendly journaling practices, using words and quick sketches to capture outdoor experiences. No drawing background is required, and the emphasis is on curiosity and attention rather than artistic skill.
Participants should bring a journal, pen or pencil, a small bag to carry supplies, and a reusable water bottle. Binoculars are optional. The workshop runs from 10 a.m. to noon, beginning in Brooks Hall and continuing on the grounds with moderate terrain. Each participant will receive a set of colored pencils to use during the session and take home.
James is a certified Advanced Indiana Master Naturalist and longtime nature photographer who encourages learners to build a sense of place by noticing the details of local landscapes and wildlife.
Advance registration is required. Sign up now at mgbsnaturejournaling.eventbrite.com. Tickets are $20 for Indiana Audubon member adults, $30 for non-member adults, and $5 for youth ages 17 and under. Children 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
