Ogden Dunes, a scenic lakeside community in northwestern Indiana with 1,219 residents, has officially received the designation of being a Bird Town Indiana community. This certification, bestowed by Indiana Audubon, recognizes the town’s dedication to bird-friendly measures and the preservation of critical habitats.

Indiana Audubon’s Bird Town Indiana program, founded in 2013 and modeled after the Tree City U.S.A. program, has partnered with other bird-friendly city initiatives across the Americas to create the Bird City Network (BCN). Led by the American Bird Conservancy and Environment for the Americas, the BCN aims to unite and empower state-centric programs into a collaborative network. Town, city, and campus officials seeking Bird Town Indiana status can learn more about applying at indianaaudubon.org/bird-town-indiana.

“We’re excited to announce Ogden Dunes’ official designation as a Bird Town Indiana community,” said Brad Bumgardner, executive director of Indiana Audubon. “This recognition highlights our ongoing commitment to preserving our local bird populations and enriching Indiana’s natural heritage.”

The official designation ceremony is slated for Saturday, May 18, at 11 a.m., adjacent to Pollywog Pond, coinciding with the Indiana Dunes Birding Festival. Town officials, accompanied by representatives from Indiana Audubon, will gather to commemorate this milestone and engage in discussions highlighting the significance of bird conservation efforts.

The Town of Ogden Dunes invites media representatives and community members to join the special event aimed at fostering awareness and engagement in bird conservation efforts within the community.
