Tell us a little about yourself. Family? Where do you live and work

I grew up on the east side of Indianapolis and attended John Marshall High School, graduating in 1979. My Biology teacher, a birdwatching enthusiast, taught us about birds. She even started a birding club at school. In fact, I still have my original Peterson’s A Field Guide to the Birds. After high school, I continued my love of birds and searching for new species.

I now live in Greenfield, just east of Indianapolis, and belong to the Greenfield Birders group, occasionally leading our bird walks. I have worked for State Farm for almost 39 years in Cumberland, Indiana.

What got you interested in birds and birding?

Growing up my parents always had bird feeders in our backyard. But it wasn’t until I was in high school that my true love for birds led me to birdwatching and traveling all over Indiana to find new species to add to my bird life list. It’s just exciting to learn about birds and their habits and habitats.

What’s your favorite birding destination, both in Indiana and outside the state?

My favorite birding destination in Indiana is Eagle Creek Park, especially during spring migration. My out-of-state favorite destination is Huntington Beach, California, specifically the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve. There, I’ve spotted many different species of shorebirds, hummingbirds, waterfowl, and other birds.

Do you have a favorite bird or group of birds?

My favorite bird is the Eastern Towhee. I love their song—it’s so pretty! My favorite group of birds is warblers; they’re so cute and colorful! Every year, my goal is to see every Indiana warbler species during both the spring and fall migrations.

How long have you been an IAS member, and what’s your favorite IAS membership benefit?

I have been an IAS member for approximately three years. My favorite IAS membership benefits are the online classes, as well as the Indiana Dunes Birding Festival and educational emails I receive from IAS.
