Nature enthusiasts and conservation-minded residents in Central Indiana are invited to attend an immersive workshop at Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary, just an hour and 20 minutes from Indianapolis. The first workshop 2025 workshop series, “Introduction to Invasive Plant Species,” takes place March 22 from 10 a.m. to noon, offering expert insights into the impact of invasive species on local ecosystems.

Led by Liz Yetter, East Central regional specialist with the State of Indiana Cooperative Invasives Management (SICM), this hands-on workshop will teach participants how to identify invasive plants and implement effective management techniques in their own backyards. The session begins with an indoor educational component in Brooks Hall, followed by an outdoor for a guided exploration of the sanctuary’s native landscapes.

“Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary is a special place for native plants and wildlife, and managing invasive species is an essential part of protecting that biodiversity,” said Libby Keyes, operations manager for the sanctuary. “Participants will leave with a better understanding of how to identify and control these species, whether at home or in their own communities.”

Ideal for Indiana Master Naturalist students seeking continuing education credits, as well as homeowners, land stewards, and outdoor enthusiasts, this workshop blends education with field experience.

Registration is $20 for Indiana Audubon member adults, $30 for non-member adults, and $5 for youth ages 17 and under. Children 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Space is limited, and registration is required. To register, visit mgbsinvasiveplants.eventbrite.com.

The “Discover Mary Gray” series continues throughout 2025, featuring hands-on conservation education and opportunities to explore the sanctuary’s role in supporting birds, wildlife, and natural landscapes. Find more events at indianaaudubon.org/events.
