Tell us a little about yourself. Family? Where do you live and work?
I grew up on the south side of Indianapolis but have lived in Greenwood for most of my adult life. Married for nearly 22 years, my husband and I have three grown children and five beloved grand-dogs. Currently, I serve as the store manager at Wild Birds Unlimited in Greenwood, a role I adore as it allows me to share my passion for birds all day long. Witnessing someone discover the joy of birding for the first time is truly rewarding. Outside of work, Iβm an avid reader. Additionally, I indulge in various crafts. True crime podcasts are also a guilty pleasure of mine.
What got you interested in birds and birding?
Iβve always enjoyed birds, but initially, my birding was limited to my backyard visitors. It wasnβt until about two years ago that I realized there was a vast array of birds beyond those who frequented feeders. I became obsessed with finding new birds and spending all of the time outside that I could. This led me to want to learn more about birds and the environment, which then led to a deeper appreciation.
What’s your favorite birding destination, in Indiana or elsewhere?
My favorite birding spot is Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge in Seymour, Indiana. I love to get there in time to catch the sunrise. It feels like Iβm the only person in the entire world, with all of the birds waking up just to tell me “Good Morning.” Every trip there is a great trip. Even if I donβt see all the birds I was hoping for, I find something else to be excited about. It could be a bat, a group of turtles, a cool rock, or a wildflower I havenβt seen before.
Do you have any advice for new birders getting into the hobby?
Since I am a new birder, Iβm always seeking advice from other birders. The advice I would give is to always have fun. When I was trying to see the Red Crossbills this past winter at Eagle Creek Park, I tried so many times and with such determination that it began to feel more like work than having a good time. (I never did see them, by the way). Birding should be about appreciating and enjoying them, not getting stressed out over them. And keep a pair of binoculars on you at all times! Every time you leave the house is a birding opportunity.
What’s your favorite thing about being an Indiana Audubon member?
My very favorite thing about being a member is all the people Iβve met. Iβve never felt like I belonged to a group of like-minded people like this before. Regardless of any differences, we all love birds. Iβm thankful for all the birders who have been so patient with helping me learn.
I also really appreciate the Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary. Iβve had really special camping experiences there. Itβs another place that I donβt really care if I see any birds or not. Itβs just a beautiful, peaceful spot.
