Indiana Audubon will host a free Youth and Family Birding Day on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. CT at the Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education in Gary, Indiana. This event extends the popular Youth and Family Birding Day offered annually as part of the Indiana Dunes Birding Festival.
The day will feature a variety of educational activities designed for children and families, including beginner bird hikes, bluebird house building, crafts, owl pellet dissections, games, and a live bird presentation by Humane Indiana Wildlife. Free binoculars will be available for those who need them. Most activities will proceed rain or shine.
Youth and Family Birding Day at the Douglas Center aims to provide valuable benefits for kids, such as promoting outdoor activity, enhancing observation skills, and fostering a connection to nature. It offers a chance for children to develop critical thinking, learn about wildlife, and enjoy quality family time.
The Douglas Center is wheelchair accessible. An Indiana Dunes National Park pass or daily admission is required. Daily passes can be purchased at the Douglas Center or online, and cost $15 per person or $25 per carload (up to 8 people).
Visit familybirdingday.eventbrite.com for more information. While registration is not required, it is requested to help the organizers plan for the number of participants. For additional questions, contact [email protected] or call 765-205-1255.
