In an exciting birding partnership with Lifer Nature Tours, Indiana Audubon is happy to present winter quarantine virtual birding field trips throughout the tropics. When we talk about premier birding lodges in Costa Rica, Rancho Naturalista will immediately take place in the conversation… as it’s known as one of the finest birdwatching lodges in Central America. But why is that? Have you ever been there? Would you like to ask the resident bird guide about it? Would you like to see it with your own eyes? what about spending the first hour of the day at their famous balcony from home? Well, this Live Virtual Tour is offering this and more.
Our Lifer Nature Tour guide, Mercedes Alpizar, will showcase the many species of hummingbirds, as well as many other birds, can be seen right from the spacious balcony where you also have a great view of the distant smoking Turrialba volcano. It’s a wonderful live online adventure for birders, photographers, and naturalists who either are planning to visit when the pandemic is over or that have already been happy in there and want to bring memories back to life again. Mercedes, and on occasion Lisa (Rancho Naturalista owner) will broadcast live at the bird feeding stations. The hummingbird feeders are renowned for attracting many species like Crowned Woodnymph, White-necked Jacobin, Green Hermit, Green Thorntail, Violet Sabrewing and Bronze-tailed Plumeleteer.
Other possibilities include Scarlet-rumped Tanager, Blue-gray Tanager, Collared Aracari, Buff-throated Saltator, Gray-headed Chachalaca and many more might be there for your enjoyment. All 100% live with all the surprises that only a Live session can produce. But overall the most real and authentic impression of this stunning place. This is not a presentation or pre-recorded. These are real birds live at Rancho Naturalista. The adrenaline of the pleasant surprises while we connect with nature at the distance. Your host will set up his scope with his camera on the various feeders so the birds will be cleary visible dancing in the air and there is where the gifted interpretation will take place with interesting aspects of natural history and identification tips to truly understand each species.
Registration proceeds are going towards Lifer Nature Tours and the beautiful sites that host these amazing birds. Registration is below, and is $12 for Indiana Audubon members ($17 for non members). A minimum of 5 participants is required. All virtual field trips begin at 8am EST/7am CST. Total time “in the field” is approximately one hour. All pre-registered participants will be sent a Zoom invite link prior to the event.
IAS is donating the majority of the workshop fee directly to Lifer Nature Tours and the guides who’s lives have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. For questions, visit Here
