Texas Rio Grande Valley Birding Tour 2020

Join Indiana Audubon for a special trip for an amazing collection of specialty US species and the peak of spring migration along the Texas southern border in late April 2020. The lower Rio Grande Valley is home to amazing diversity and landscapes, and spring is an excellent time to explore this birding hotspot. the 2020 Texas birding tour is led by IAS members and experienced guides Amy Kearns and Mark Welter. Amy and Mark have experience leading Indiana Audubon tours and have experience birding the Rio Grande Valley area. The specific trip dates are April 18-25, 2020.
As part of Indiana Audubon’s commitment to conservation in areas we visit, a portion of the trip fees will be donated towards The Valley Land Fund‘s conservation work in south Texas in protecting land and water conservation for both parklands and private landowners.
The trip would embark from Harlingen, Texas and involve 6 days of birding, with overnight stays in Harlingen, and McAllen. A list of target species includes:
Day 1 (4/18): Arrive in Harlingen (night at Holiday Inn Express Harlingen)
Day 2 (4/19): Laguna Atascosa NWR, Old Port Isabel Rd, South Padre Island (night at Holiday Inn Express Harlingen)
Day 3 (4/20): Sabal Palm Grove Sanctuary, Brownsville dump, Boca Chica beach, Resaca de la Palma SP (night at La Quinta Inn & Suites Mission)
Day 4 (4/21): Quinta Mazatlan, Bentsen-Rio Grande SP, nocturnal birds (night at La Quinta Inn & Suites Mission)
Day 5 (4/22): Estero Llano Grande SP, Edinburgh scenic wetlands, Anzalduas County Park (night at La Quinta Inn & Suites Mission)
Day 6 (4/23): Salienero Wildlife Preserve, Falcon State Park, nocturnal birds (night at La Quinta Inn & Suites Mission)
Day 7 (4/24): Santa Ana NWR, Frontera Audubon Center (night at Holiday Inn Express Harlingen)
Day 8 (4/25): Depart from Harlingen for home.
The 2020 Texas Birding Tour costs are:
$1,085 per person IAS Member Double Occupancy
$1,175 per person Non-IAS Member Double Occupancy
$320 Single Supplement Fee
Included in the costs are all travel and lodging from and returning to Harlingen, April 18-25, all guiding and entrance fees, and breakfast starting on Day 2-8. Participants are responsible for all lunch and dinner food and drinks, as well as arranging travel to Harlingen before and after the trip. Southwest airlines offers several options to Harlingen from both Indianapolis and Chicago (Midway).
All interested participants must register with a $100 deposit due at registration and must return the signed field trip terms and conditions. Full payment balance due 60 days before trip departure.
