Songbird Banding Demonstrations
July 14 @ 6:00 am - 11:00 am EDT
Join us at the Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary for Banding Birds & Bird Walks!
Join Indiana Audubon for a morning of bird banding at Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary. Bird banding provides a wealth of information on the habits of both migratory and breeding birds throughout the preserve. Banding takes place for several hours during the morning hours. Songbird banding set up begins at 6am. Observers may arrive as early as 7am to walk the nets and enjoy the banding of birds. We’ll also complete point counts (listing birds seen and heard) along the way every hour.
In 2018, those wishing to learn more about banding and participate in the banding process, including net use, practice in bird removal, data collection, and ageing/sexing practice NEED to arrive at 6am.
A few notes:
- If it is raining – we won’t band. Send me a message (email@example.com or 765-309-2958) to check if nets are opening. We try our best to send out reminders through the season a day before if we can’t band due to weather. IF it looks like rain on a Saturday – we’ll move the date to Sunday if folks can help.
- Nets go up at sunrise. During the summer, we try to start putting nets up at 6am. If you are coming from far away, no worries. If we know ahead of time that we have limited help we can put nets up the night before and get them up on my own. First net check is at 7am.
- Everyone is welcome to spend the night before at the Sanctuary! Camping is always available and beds/couch are here if you prefer. We love having folks join us and welcome everyone! (let us know in advance).
- Remember: Bug spray (we keep some on hand), dress in layers (for the cool mornings), hiking shoes, and clothes without buttons or things hanging off of them (that get caught in the nets).
Other banding dates in the 2018 season include:
May 26, June 2, June 16, June 23, July 7, July 14, July 21, July 28, June 24, July 1, July 15, July 22, and Aug 5.
