Shorebird ID Workshop

August 2 @ 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm EDT

$15 – $25

Stilt Sandpiper

Increase your shorebird identification skills!  Fall shorebirds are some of the most difficult birds for both new and experienced birders to learn.  Their complexity of both age classes, coupled with often difficult viewing conditions or distance can make them a real challenge for the most seasoned observer.

This special webinar workshop will illustrate the fall shorebirds that are moving through Indiana right now, emphasizing the most difficult ID Challenges and many similar looking species. Many individuals shy away from shorebird identification because “shorebirds all look the same.” This workshop aims to dispel that notion. We stress the importance of shape, structure, and proportions in identification, with plumage features coming into play only to decide between two or three species. This approach is illustrated using several pairs of similar shorebird species as well as to differentiate between major types of shorebirds.

This workshop is being led by Chicago shorebird expert, Geoff Williamson, and will be conducted via a Zoom livestream to registered participants.  All participants will receive the login information 24 hours before the workshop begins.  The workshop will be held on Sunday, August 2 at 3pm ET/2pm CT.  Registration is $15 for Indiana Audubon members, $25 for non-members, and limited participation for questions and answers.
