IAS Winter UP Tour 2020-

January 31 - February 2

$100 – $279
Snowy Owl

Indiana Audubon is pleased to offer another adventure for winter specialties of the northwoods February 2020. The trip is led by IAS executive director, Brad Bumgardner, who has toured the UP area for 6 tours, plus additional time outside of tours, and is familiar with the locations and birding areas around eastern Michigan UP area. The trip is offered for a maximum of 10 people.  The trip is shorter and less species rich then the Sax-Zim Bog area of Minnesota, but more economical for some birders on a tight budget or less time available. Additionally, Snowy Owls are much more dependable here, with some years seeing in excess of 20 owls in one day.

The trip involves single day drives with limited birding to and from the Mackinac/St. Ignace area the first and last day. A list of some 20 expected specialty species are included below. Most should be seen without too much difficulty. (*rare)

Golden Eagle Northern Shrike
Bald Eagle Gray Jay
Red-breasted Merganser Common Raven
Common Goldeneye Red-breasted Nuthatch
Ruffed Grouse Pine Grosbeak
Spruce Grouse Purple Finch
Sharp-tailed Grouse Common Redpoll
Northern Goshawk Bohemian Waxwing
Rough-legged Hawk Snow Bunting
Snowy Owl Red Crossbill
Northern Hawk Owl* White-winged Crossbill
Great Gray Owl* Pine Siskin

Lodging both nights will be in Mackinaw City which offers complimentary breakfast for participants. A rough itinerary is below.

Day 1: Meet for those wishing to carpool together around 10am. 5-6 hour drive. Arrive before sunset. Check in and dinner in St. Ignace.
Day 2: Depart hotel before 8am. Bird by car to Rudyard for Snowy Owls. Also visit Pickford, Hulbert Bog, Whitefish Point. Lunch in Sault. Ste. Marie, MI. Dinner in St. Ignace.
Day 3: Optional morning birding for missing targets, return home by noon.

TOTAL COST per person: $239.00. Single Supplement: $100.00. Non-Member Cost: $279.00
