IAS Winter Sax-Zim Bog Tour 2020- FULL
February 14, 2020 - February 17, 2020$150 – $338
Indiana Audubon is again leading an out of state tour for members to view the winter specialties of the north woods February 2020. Like the winter UP tours offered the past few years, this car pool tour extends the birding possibilities, to a location where both Great Gray Owl and Northern Hawk Owl are more consistently seen. This year’s dates are February 14-17, 2020 and would be led by IAS member Shari McCollough. Shari has toured the Sax-Zim Bog area and are familiar with the locations and birding areas around the Duluth area. A maximum of 12 participants would be allowed to register.
The trip would involve single day drives with no birding to and from the Duluth, MN area the first and last day. A list of some 25 expected specialty species are included below. Most should be seen without too much difficulty.
|Long-tailed Duck||Snowy Owl||Bohemian Waxwing|
|Barrow’s Goldeneye||Northern Hawk Owl||Snow Bunting|
|Golden Eagle||Great Gray Owl||Red Crossbill|
|Bald Eagle||Black-backed Woodpecker||White-winged Crossbill|
|Ruffed Grouse||Northern Shrike||Pine Siskin|
|Spruce Grouse||Gray Jay||Pine Grosbeak|
|Sharp-tailed Grouse||Common Raven||Purple Finch|
|Northern Goshawk||Boreal Chickadee||Common Redpoll|
|Rough-legged Hawk||Red-breasted Nuthatch|
Lodging all three nights will be in a Wyndham Super 8 in Duluth or similar on the west side of Duluth, which offers complimentary breakfast for participants. The trip timing is during the Zax-Sim Bog birding festival, providing the trip’s leader with a good supply of recent birding sightings for higher success in finding a few of the rarer species. Because of the festival, booking rooms soon is a priority. A rough itinerary is below.
