February 23 - February 26$115 – $255
THIS TRIP IS FULL
Join fellow IAS members for a winter excursion into the heart of the north woods in early 2018 for an adventure in search of wintering owl species and winter finches. The trip is scheduled for February 23-26, and will include the famous Sax-Zim Bog birding area, northwest of Duluth, MN. Target birds include Snowy Owl, Great-gray Owl, and Northern Hawk Owl. Additionally, the area is good for winter finches, including Evening Grosbeaks, Pine Grosbeak, and redpolls. Other notables include Northern Shrike, Sharp-tailed Grouse, Ruffed Grouse, Bald Eagles, Common Raven, Gray Jay, Boreal Chickadees, Pine Siskins, Bohemian Waxwings, and Rough-legged Hawk.
The trip is a car pool tour led by Bird Town Indiana coordinator, Kevin Cornell, with attendees having the option of caravaning together on Friday, February 23 at Cool Creek Park, in Carmel. Overnight accommodations will be in Superior, Wisconsin with a full day of birding Saturday and Sunday, with longer drives on Friday and Monday.
TRIP COST (assuming double occupancy)- $222.00 per IAS Member. Non-member rate- $255.00. Single Supplement $115.00. Tickets go on sale August 20, 2017.
Participants are responsible for all food/drink costs, as well as transportation to and from the Duluth birding areas. Overnight lodging for three nights is included in the cost. The leader can help with arranging car pool vehicles. Car pool drivers should prepare for snowy driving conditions. SUV or four wheel drive vehicles are recommended but not required. The trip difficulty is easy and most travel is by car caravan. Foot travel on snow covered gravel or paved roadways; the biggest challenge would be that the roads may be icy and slippery. Duration of foot travel of less than a 1/2 mile at a time. Participants need to be able to withstand cold temperatures for periods of 30-45 minutes. Great care will be taken to avoid excessive disturbance to many of these sensitive wintering bird species, this includes following the ABA Birding Code of Ethics and no owl baiting allowed during the trip.
