IAS Jaegerfest Field Trip 2019
September 20 - September 22$125 – $294
Indiana Audubon is excited to take it’s members to view the famed longshore migration that has been capitalized on just outside of Duluth, MN where the southwestern extension of Lake Superior pinches migrants on the big lake close to shore. Wisconsin Point is one of the best inland US sites to see jaegers in migration, and the Wisconsin Society for Ornithology event, Jaegerfest, helps birders from around the Midwest see this amazing migration. Additionally, streams of migrating raptors funnel down the west side of Lake Superior, with the nearby Hawk Ridge as the premier destination to view daily counts of 1,000-10,000 Broad-winged Hawks, and an assortment of high counts for other migrating raptor species.
This weekend field trip would be led by Indiana Audubon member, Matt Igleski, and include a maximum of 10 participants. The specific trip dates are September 20-22, 2019.
This trip will embark from Indiana and involve participants carpooling or finding their way to Superior, WI, where two nights of overnight lodging will be provided. Birding would occur all day Saturday, and Sunday morning before returning back to Indiana. In addition to the above mentioned specialties, general songbird migration will be peaking through the area, with the second half of warbler migration, thrushes, vireos, and sparrows all represented in good migrating numbers. Some specialties expected on this trip will include:
Blue-winged Teal Green-winged Teal Redhead
Common Merganser Parasitic Jaeger Long-tailed Jaeger (uncommon)
