Dunes Owl Banding: Behind the Scenes
October 27 - November 9Free
It’s a special night behind the scenes at the Indiana Dunes owl banding station! These behind the scenes nights help fund this multi year project to explore the migration timing, populations, and life history of this very unique Indiana owl. Registered participants will get to meet before the nets are put up to learn about the program and assist with net set up. Participants will perform hourly net checks with staff and volunteers and get a chance to see owls up close before they are banded. Participants may wish to bring their own dinner and snacks, as nearby restaurants are several miles away. Due to the nature of the program, owls can never be guaranteed on any particular night, but every effort is made in suitable weather conditions to allow for close up views and an intimate look at owl research in the Indiana Dunes. Banding occurs for a minimum of three hours each night, with participants welcome to come and go as they please. Payment is taken the night of the program, cash, check or credit card. Message us to bring your group to a special behind the scenes night.
This special behind the scenes night is separate from the general banding demonstrations and includes a special donation that helps with owl banding operations. Participants should be 12 years or older. In 2019 participants can choose from one of the following dates to participate:
October 27- Meet at 5:30pm CDT
October 31- Meet at 5:30pm CDT
November 1- Meet at 5:30pm CDT
November 3- Meet at 4:30pm CDT
November 9- Meet at 4:30pm CDT
Behind the Scenes involve a $50 donation to Indiana Audubon, paid the night of the program. A reduced child donation of $35 is available for children at least 12 years of age. Due to the nature of the research, the program may not be suitable for children under 12. Please speak with IAS if you feel a child may be appropriate for the program night.
