Dunes Fall Birding Series: Reynold’s Creek Raptors
November 26, 2016 @ 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm UTC-5Free – $10
Join IAS for a late fall look at this new DNR property in NW Indiana. Reynold’s Creek Gamebird Habitat Area sits between Chesterton and Michigan City and is just a few miles south of Lake Michigan. The new property has developed a growing list of good bird species in the now fallow and managed fields and meadows. In recent winters, this location has hosted plentiful harriers, kestrels, merlins, Rough-legged Hawks, and Short-eared Owls. Snowy Owls have also been seen here during the winter.
Kristin Stratton will meet registered participants in the south parking lot at 3pm, located on 600 E, just north of 1275 N. This is approximately 1/4 mile south of the Dunes NL Heron Rookery (Porter co.). From there late afternoon hawks and othe raptors will be sought out, with the group concluding in one of the north lots to watch for early evening Short-eared Owls coming out of their grassland roosts.
The trip is free for IAS members, and $10 for non-members. Registration is not required for IAS members. The 3pm start time is local, central time. Please dress for cold weather, as the temperature and wind can feel colder near the Lake Michigan lakefront. Note: All IAS trips will require advance registration beginning in 2017.
