Birds & Bison at Kankakee Sands Field Trip

June 5 @ 7:00 am - 10:00 am EDT

Kankakee Sands is a birder’s and wildflower enthusiast’s paradise!

The more than 7,000 acres hosts an amazing array of birds, wildflowers, plants and animals that fills the prairie with song and sights to behold. As a restoration project, the beauty of the Sands gets better every year. In late 2016, American Bison were introduced on the landscape for the first time. Their introduction is a great experiment on disturbance on the land and how it will benefit the many grassland birds.

June can be a great month for summer breeding birds in full song. Many specialty birds here include: Northern Harriers, Northern Bobwhite, Upland Sandpiper, Yellow-breasted Chat, Dickcissel, Henslow’s Sparrow, Grasshopper Sparrow, Blue Grosbeak, and Orchard Oriole. The nearby Willow Slough will be visited if time allows, where Kentucky Warbler, Bell’s Vireo, and Lark Sparrows are a possibility.

The trip is led by Matt Kalwasinski and it is truly for the early birds, as the hours shortly after sunrise can be the best times for birding in the summer. Registered participants will meet at 7:00AM (EDT)/6:00AM (CDT) at the Kankakee Sands Office Parking Lot. Participants must pre-register, as trips fill up fast. Car pool birding is the best way to bird the property, but stops are common to get out and listen for singing birds. The trip will conclude around 11:00 AM or shortly after. The trip is free for IAS members and $10 for non-IAS members. For questions, email Matt Kalwasinski.
